I'm Very Tall

Ho ho ho.
I'm kidding, of course. I'm not.
I'm only 5'2" or maybe just a tad taller.
But definitely shorter than 5'3".
This was an outtake from the time when husby did not
catch enough of the top part of the shirt for me to post.
It was the denim western shirt (as opposed to the western denim shirt ... so very confusing!). But I'll get to that on another post.

Since I'm not tall, petite sizing is of great interest to me,
especially when some things like chambray shirts tend to be oversized and I don't feel like going swimming.
After much crewlade, I got the petite keeper chambray shirt. In addition to regular, it comes as small as petite 00 and how can one go wrong when an entire "design team pored over ... archives in search of the best chambray shirt ... ever made?" With that kind of a buildup,
of course I had to be a little disappointed with the keeper.
It's fine, (and please excuse the next phrase but) it's what it is.
I thought it roomy for petite 00 (doesn't that sound like it should be tiny, tiny?).
It has button tab sleeves if you need help keeping the rolled sleeves up. And though it doesn't have button-down collars,
there is a button* at the back of the collar.
*This is known as the third collar button because it's usually on shirts with button-down collars.
Did you know button-down collars were introduced by Brooks Brothers in 1896? This is for you, xoxo :)
It's of a very soft and somewhat limp and lightweight chambray.
Well worn in its feeling and with obvious fading.
That's probably my least favorite part, the obvious fading.
I've never been crazy about conspicuous distressing.
Which brings me to the faded chambray popover.
It comes in alpha sizes and it too is available in petite. Here I have on the petite XX-small. As you can see, it's smaller than the keeper,
the sleeves are not nearly as long and the shoulders are
about 1/2 inch narrower. It's cut straighter and just a little wider
in the body to ease popping over when putting on.
It is also very soft and lightweight as the keeper, but with an
allover fading that is a lighter color than the keeper.
And as you can see, it is rather plain.
Even the collar points are kept clean with the option of
being buttoned down via a hidden contraption.
While the popover does not have the third collar button,
it has clever little button hole pockets underneath the collar.
Without a full placket or fussy pockets,
it works well for layering.
I popped the Liberty schoolboy blazer in June's Meadow floral over it. And added a couple necklaces to make it more girly.
Who knew husby would love it when I'm dressed like a little man?

  1. okay that is funny! My husband loves me in pant suits! I am not a fan of faded chambray, but as soon as you put it over the jacket - voila - looks wonderful!

    1. Mine loves me most in dresses and usually hates when I'm dressed, as he says, like a little man. But for some reason he really liked this one. Maybe I don't really like faded chambray either, the one that's faded all over I think of as a light blue.

  2. I have the keeper chambray and love it,but you are right it is oversized.
Got the 0,but could have easily size down to 00,oh well:)

    1. Hi ina. I debated whether I would prefer the shirt to be smaller (not that it was available any smaller) but think these shirts are supposed to be oversized for the right look, at least that's what I tell myself. ;)

  3. thank you for these reviews - it's hard to find a nicely fitted chambray shirt especially when (like me) you're shorter than the average height. your keeper is a winner!

    1. Hi phiphi. I will get to more of these shirts over the next weeks and there are some that are more fitted if you don't want the oversized look. These are at least shorter so they aren't like tunics on us.

  4. I'm also 5' 2". I have the Keeper Chambray in a petite 4 which I sized down in. I wear a 6P in J.Crew perfect shirts. I tried on a bunch of chambray/denim shirts from J.Crew and Madewell.

My favorite for fit is the Western jean shirt in desert willow wash from Madewell. I got the small and it's nicely fitted. It is denim though so it's thicker than the Keeper. Since it's not a petite, the sleeves are a little long.

The Denim Boyshirt in campground wash from Madewell was awful. The description says shrunken fit but it's far from it.

    1. Hello Mei. I also have the Madewell western jean shirt and it's one of my favorites. And I have another Madewell shirt that was supposed to be a shrunken fit in size XX-small but it might as well have been XX-large, maybe it's the same one you said, I'll have to look that up. That one was a big surprise, not in a good way, as far as fit.

  5. Haha! Those J C copywriters just pile on the bullshit, don't they!!
I thought you were much taller than you are! I'm also around 5'2", but you seems way taller in your photos.
Thanks for your reviews of these. That Liberty print blazer is very beautiful!

    1. Hi ruth. The copywriter's words are bad but what's worse if when I believe her!

The Liberty print blazer turned out to be one of my favorite purchases. The fabric is very light so it's great for really warm days but has enough body to keep the structure of the jacket. And I love the print!

  6. I had a stream of chambray shirts in different styles and sizes coming and going. I'm on the road at the moment and I can't remember which I kept!

    1. The awful thing is I decided I was going to try practically all of them as a public service and since I don't get around to reviewing them quick enough, kept them all!

  7. I had major mix ups with the denim western and western denim shirt. However, I have both and they just run large to me too. I have them in size 0 and could have sized down to 00.

    Very pretty styling:)

    1. Isn't that awful? I also have them both and can't remember which is which until I check a polyvore image or the original online description. One of them was a much better fit while the other, the darker one that's a cotton-linen blend, was quite oversized.

  8. Yes, you are very tall. I like the denim western shirt the best of all these. I have a similar one but I don't know if it's the western denim or denim western or none of the above. But I like it anyway.

I did know about Brooks Brothers inventing the button-down collar. Apparently it was a huge hit because before that men had the two-piece collar shirts, which were a huge pain. I find little trivia like that very interesting but I'm sure I'm quite alone in that.

    1. Love all of these! I mean really, you can't go wrong with chambray, right?! :o)

    2. Haha, xoxo. Do you own the denim western shirt? I tend to reach for the other one, the western denim shirt, more often and I like it a lot.

Of course you'd know about that button-down collar, I enjoy trivia too. Did you also know about people stockpiling the shirts with the third collar button when BB decided to discontinue that? ;) Connecting on a little-known trivia was the first connection with husby when we met.

    3. Andrea, I completely agree, which is why I have so many of them. I think they're like jeans, you need different washes and lengths and cuts depending on what you wear with them ... :)

  9. So funny - I always thought you were really tall - maybe because you're slim as a whip. I know what you mean about distressing, I like things crisp and clear but I do like that top shirt on you. Looks great with the floral jacket. Love how you mix all the patterns. My only issue with my chambray shirt is that I wear it way too much and it should be more fitted to be flattering(but then I'd never wear it)

    1. Hi Jody. Oh I am really tall, you'd laugh if you ever see me in person. Though I don't think of myself as small, others keep reminding me I am. I've seen how you wear your chambray shirt and I think it's quite flattering on you. They may lose that casual flair if they are more fitted.

  10. You always photograph tall. I would've pegged you for at least 5'7". Good info on the chambray. They all sort of blend in until you break them down.

    1. Hi gigi. Wow, at least 5'7"? Maybe that's about how tall I think of myself ;) I remember a 6' tall college roommate getting mad at me for "taking all the tall guys" but I couldn't help who I was attracted to.

I'm gonna continue sMaCkInG down the shirts.

  11. 00 petite?? Wow you are tiny!!!
I have the Keeper chambray shirt and it is a little baggy on me too...which is annoying when I want to tuck it into a skirt. Too much fabric:(

    1. Hi Sharon. I will review some western shirts next, those are shaped more around the waist but I'm not sure if the thicker denim fabric would tuck well. Hmmm ... I will see if I can come up with a good tucker chambray shirt.
