That coat looks like something you'd see in a BBC documentary about the Blitz. Or the Depression. Or - wait! Got it! Putting scraps and remnants together to live through clothes rationing during war and austerity. There'll always be an England. But that coat is not DL's Finest Hour.
Well! :) I can see some possibilities with the trench but I don't think the jacket would suit you. I can hear Clinton from WNTW say to keep the neckline open to elongate the neck.
I thought the second one was a blouse, but at further inspection of hodge-podge mess I see that it is an even scarier coat! I hope no one spent money on this
Ha! The kindest comment I've read about the jacket was "the most unattractive item I ever saw from J Crew." It's from 2007 during my hiatus from J.Crew but best I could tell, the jacket sold out.
Somebody is trying too hard with both of these coats. Each of them are just too much- too much fabric, too much pattern, too many different styles, I'm sure too many $$...ugh. I will stick to the basic, boring classics, thank you very much!
You hit the nail ... it's working too hard as opposed to smart. I don't know about the jacket, though it was a limited edition Collection piece, but the trench coat is also Collection and priced at $1,200 and oops, looks like it's sold out too.
No accounting for taste. My mother always told me it shouldn't cost alot for good taste. Maybe some people see "collection" and think it is worth it. It might make an interesting experiment to add that tag to really ugly fashion and see how it sells. Remember the poor Emperor who didn't wear any clothes?...
Your mother is a smart woman. It's interesting to think about perceived value vs. real value, isn't it? When I am sensible, which isn't often, I think: Would this be so desirable if found in another shop with a different label and price tag on it?
I can't say but they sure got a lot of reaction for the jacket. There was a description for an auction including this: The lining on this jacket is so amazing, that it actually inspired J.Crew to create the ugliest jacket in their history, the "Cheshire Inside-Out Jacket." And see this for a full tirade and more pictures of the jacket.
Oh no, is it wrong that in a way I am drawn towards both jackets? You know, if the trench was just a smidge less furry and the collar to the second piece more like a regular collar than a ruffle wreath, we could have something here ...
Hi Lisa, not wrong, maybe you'd rock them. They did both sell out. However, from the pictures of the jacket from different angles here, I couldn't help but notice how unflattering it was on the model, who probably has a gorgeous figure.
That coat is odd isn't it? It's like something Mrs Teddy Bear would wear.
ReplyDeleteThat's it! I can picture Mrs. Teddy Bear wrapped up in it.

ReplyDeleteThis coat does have a Les Misérables vibe about it. They did better in GWTW.
DeleteHA! Have a happy labour day Tiffany Rose! I am unsure of both coats, though strangely drawn to each, which is no surprise, given my taste!

DeleteThose coats are so Crazy Town! The trench is hugely thick and puffy as well. My gosh.
ReplyDeleteThey left me a little speechless so it was an easy post with the pictures telling the story. ;)
DeleteOh my, that blouse is scary!

DeleteJust wondering - WTH were they thinking?

ReplyDeleteClever...but the jacket and coat are rather frightening! Aren't they? I sure hope you thought so.
ReplyDeleteNot to worry, they are not on my shopping list even if they weren't sold out. ;)
DeleteBoth of those have all the bells and whissstles that'sss for sure, and the coat reminds me of fozeee bear
ReplyDeleteHa, too many tricks up the sleeve. This could be a case of too much is too much going on. ;)
