The Good Outfit

Here's another total love. Thanks so much to tarareilly on the JCA Exchange, who passed this beauty -- the Heloise houndstooth coat -- to me. Its swing shape and raglan sleeves fit easily over thick sweaters. The neutral pattern works equally well with black, brown or brights.

The same with the boots. Bronwyn tall two-tone burnished leather midheel boots say it all. The two tones will go where no single color can. The midheels give a bit of lift while still a very comfortable walking height. The burnished leather is simply luscious.

When the temps drop (yes, even in SoCal, it can get in the 30s for overnight lows), I call on the thick gauge Cambridge cable ribbed turtleneck for its polished functionality. Easily cold, I've been known to wear thermals underneath for extra coziness (can't help it, I was born in the subtropics!).

That is the Sterling skirt in double-serge wool. To be truthful, I had no interest in it until I read the rave reviews in blogland. I was lucky enough to pick up both heather acorn and heather carbon on sale and in my size. Though I'm 5'2", the petite length is not hitting me slightly below the knees as shown on the model but I think that will make the skirt more timeless. The easy-wearing style, classic colors and lovely double-serge wool will keep the skirts a mainstay for many years to come.

I'm putting this one in the Good Outfits folder (and hope I get to file more often than every February 29). What are some of your good ones?

  1. Good outfits folder...AGREED!

This is so classic and chic! :)

I love how when in CA for the summers to visit my relatives (they are all coastal So Cal--from LA to Santa Barbara county), it dips into the mid 40s at night. My hubby always forgets a jacket and I always think a hoodie will be warm enough. We always end up doing a walmart run. LOL.

Your nights have been colder than ours lately! Our winter was mia. MIA!!!

    1. Thanks, Dina!

People don't realize how chilly it can get in California, especially at night in the summers. I often overhear visitors wishing they had brought a jacket.

I do love a chance to wear coats and cozy sweaters. We're spoiled by the almost always weather report of partly cloudy, highs in the low 70s ...

    1. I'm not sure I have a formula either. Mixing various neutrals could be this one. I think I know what you mean. ;)

I think one important factor to a good outfit is that it can't be fussy. So no gaping top, shoes that hurt, clingy skirt ...

  3. Excellent combination of neutrals to boost the interest level. My friend has the Heloise coat and it is a beauty. How fortunate you were able to pick it up. It's so classic, you'll have it forever.

    1. Indeed I was lucky! Especially after my recent experience with a couple of highly sought after coats from this season(post to come). Agreed, the Heloise is true love.

  4. This outfit is just perfect! You look fabulous. I know I can't go wrong with skinny jeans (like Toothpicks), ballet flats, and a tee or button down topped with a blazer or longer cardigan. :)

  6. That's so classic, you look like a Lady of the Manor in that outfit. Really that's how I should be dressing in winter rather than hiding under my giant parka.

    1. Thank you, Tabitha. I do feel like a real lady in this get up, which is probably why I submitted my polyvore set to True Ladies. From what I can tell, you always look like a Lady!

  9. The boots (are adorable!) Do they run true to size or are they a little snug? I've heard most J.Crew boots run a half size small (so if you're normally an 8.5, you need a 9, etc.)

    1. Hi Jenn! I love these boots, they are from a few years back. With J.Crew footwear, I've had to size up for pumps but I don't recall when I've had to size up for boots and I own quite a few pairs. I don't have the boots handy (it's not boot weather for us, it was 90F today!) or I'd double check but I am 99% certain these boots are in my normal size. I hope this helps. :)
